IT Support Specialist | The Millennium Group
Each month, we spotlight one of our incredible team members whose dedication, talent, and personality help shape The Millennium Group’s success. This month, we’re excited to feature Jay Lao, whose journey from the classroom to the helpdesk proves that technology is as much about people as it is about machines.
Professional Journey
Jay’s professional story began in the world of finance, serving as an IT staff member at a local bank from 2011 to 2015. A few years later, his career took an unexpected but rewarding turn toward education. From 2015 to 2018, Jay became an elementary IT teacher and later a college instructor, where he discovered how technology can empower learning and creativity.
“The transition from backend systems to the classroom gave me a new perspective,” he says. “Tech isn’t just about machines; it’s about people, learning, and growth.”
Role at The Millennium Group
As part of the IT support team at The Millennium Group, Jay is on the front lines of client service. Whether it’s diagnosing technical issues, resolving tickets, or guiding users through solutions, he ensures technology runs smoothly across the board.
“I like to think of myself as the first line of defense,” Jay explains. “If there’s a glitch, a login issue, or a system hiccup, I’m part of the crew that makes problems disappear.”
What He Loves About His Role
For Jay, the best part of his job is simple: helping people. “There’s something satisfying about being the calm voice on the other end of the line,” he says. “I get to make someone’s day run smoother—and the bonus? I get paid to do what I enjoy.”
Getting to Know Jay
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?I wanted to be a lawyer; someone who could stand up, make a case, and win with words. But my mom quickly talked me out of it, reminding me that even liars get defended! It made me think deeply about integrity and the kind of impact I wanted to have.
What are some of your favorite hobbies? Reading light novels and traveling with my family. I love getting lost in new worlds; whether in a book or a new destination.
Who do you admire most in your life?I deeply admire President Rodrigo Duterte. His decisiveness, boldness, and unapologetic leadership style inspire me to take a stand and stay true to my principles, even when it’s not easy.
Can you share something unique that has happened in your life? One of my proudest moments was unexpectedly receiving a Bronze Medal at the end of college; not for chasing awards, but simply for doing my best. I dedicated that medal to my father, who had to stop his education at eight years old, to support his family. Placing that medal around his neck was one of the most meaningful moments of my life.
Who is your favorite superhero?Son Goku! He’s not just powerful; he’s resilient, optimistic, and always striving to be better.
What is your favorite book? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It’s a timeless reminder that the journey toward your dreams is as important as the destination.
What is your favorite movie? The Pursuit of Happyness. It’s a beautiful story of perseverance, love, and hope even when the odds are stacked against you.
Where is your favorite place to visit? The beach. My family and I visit at least once a month. I love the sound of the waves and the peace it brings; though, ironically, I never learned how to swim!
What is your favorite binge-worthy TV series?Game of Thrones. (Well, except for the last episode!) The political intrigue, complex characters, and moral dilemmas kept me hooked from start to finish.
Jay’s story is one of growth, humility, and heart. From supporting bank networks to inspiring young learners and now helping clients thrive through technology, he embodies The Millennium Group’s spirit of service, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
