Microsoft's Free Upgrade Offer For 500 Million Windows 10 Users

The end of Windows 10 is only six months away ending on October 14, 2025, and Microsoft has warned the 750 million Windows 10 users worldwide, “Don’t wait until the last minute,” according to an article in Forbes this week. Critical security patches and updates will end for hundreds of millions users who don’t upgrade to Windows 11 before the Windows 10 end-of-life date in October putting them at increased risk to cyber threats.

Microsoft Says Upgrade Now!

Microsoft estimates 500 million Windows 10 users’ hardware is eligible for the new operating system and they recommend the free upgrade now. If your hardware is not eligible for the upgrade, Microsoft states do not try to upgrade, your PC will need to be retired. With critical security updates ending for Windows 10, users who do not upgrade will face increased security risks and potential compatibility issues with new software.

Upgrades to  Windows 11 continues to increase but according to the GlobalStats stat counter, 54% of Windows 10 users continue to stick with Windows 10. Microsoft estimates 240 million users’ machines will not meet the more robust hardware requirements of Windows 11 and will need to be replaced. Many have opted for the $30 or more support extensions, but they will also eventually have to upgrade.

Recall is Back

Recall, the controversial screenshotting upgrade that remembers everything you do on your PC, is a concern for many users, according to the Forbes article. Microsoft did add privacy and opt-out protections, but it may still cause users to resist the upgrade.

Increased Security Risks

PC users who stay on Windows 10 and run an unsupported OS will be targeted by cyber criminals at an alarming rate. When Windows 7 reached end of life, it was a field day for the cyber thieves as they attempted to exploit over 100 million Windows 7 PCs, and many were successful.  There will be even more unprotected Windows 10 machines, and the assumption is that the cyber criminals are eager for the October 14 end of life date.

Windows 11 Benefits

  • Enhanced Security: Windows 11 offers improved security features, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, which help protect against cyber threats.

  • Improved Performance: Windows 11 provides faster load times, better memory management, and enhanced multitasking tools, all of which contribute to increased productivity and a smoother user experience.

  • Modern User Interface: The new operating system features a sleek and modern design, making it easier to navigate and use. This can boost employee satisfaction and reduce training costs.

  • Compliance: Staying compliant with industry regulations is critical. Upgrading to Windows 11 ensures that your systems meet the latest security and privacy standards.

Preparing for the Upgrade

  • Check Hardware Compatibility: Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool to ensure your devices meet the stricter requirements of Windows 11. If your hardware is not eligible, consider recycling or landfill options rather than attempting an upgrade.

  • Develop a Plan: Build a documented upgrade plan, including phased rollouts to avoid staff downtime. Running a test upgrade on a few devices can help prepare for a smoother transition.

  • Train Your Workforce: Provide training to employees in advance to help them adapt to the new operating system. Engaging with IT professionals can also ensure a better upgrade experience.

Risks of Not Upgrading

  • Continuing to use Windows 10 after its end of life will put your systems at great risk. An unsupported operating system is more vulnerable to security breaches, which can lead to loss of data, revenue, and sensitive information. Additionally, lack of performance patches and updates may cause compatibility issues with new software and hardware, affecting productivity and efficiency.
